Screening is a vital tool in employing substitute teachers. As with permanent teachers,
for prospective substitutes must meet state and district requirements. Procedures should be in
place to ensure the verification of an applicant’s employment history, references, criminal record,
and to safeguard students within the district. Screening provides an opportunity to
assess an applicant’s likelihood to provide continuity in the instructional process in the
absence of the permanent teacher. The four basic screening components include:
- Prescreening
- Paper and Pencil Screening
- Interview
- Background Check
